Note taking is not unfamiliar for us. Everyone takes notes using the traditional pen and paper. As the technology improves every day, note taking is now possible by digital means. OneNote is a note-taking app from Microsoft. It is a cross-platform application and is available for Android, iOS, Windows, Web and even Apple Watch. If you’re a devoted user of OneNote, here are some of the Tips and Tricks that you should know.
1. Sharing and Co-working
If you are a team player and likes to work together with people, this feature benefits you in a number of ways. Basically this allows you to share your Notebook or Section or a Page from OneNote with anyone. You can share any notebook with anyone by inviting them to your Notebook. You can also restrict their access to the notebook by changing the type of permission. This includes Edit and View.
To share a Notebook, Click Share from the top right corner >> Select either Page or Section or Notebook >> Type in the email address of the person to share with and the level of permission and click Share.
2. Notebook presence
Notebook presence is a feature that helps you know who are currently working on a Notebook or page you shared in real-time. This is a handy feature, if you are working with your team members on something.
You can see the persons working on a Notebook or page by clicking on the Notebook presence button located near the Share button on the top right corner. Once you click it, you can view the persons and the Section/Page which he is currently viewing.
3. Email to OneNote
Email to OneNote is a handy feature that helps to save important stuffs from your email directly into OneNote, be it a receipt, travel confirmations or an important email. This can be done by forwarding the email to email@example.com, which in turn saves it to the pre-configured Notebook.
To configure your email, Navigate to this link, where you can setup email to OneNote. After setting up the email and the destination Notebook, you can forward the emails to be saved in OneNote. To save an email to a specific section of notebook, just add @SectionName to the Subject line of the forwarded mail. This will save it to the desired section.
4. OneNote Clipper
OneNote Web Clipper is an extension that can be added to Chrome. This is a feature that helps user to share anything that you see on the web to OneNote. Just add the extension to chrome and you’re good to go.
After installing, you can find the extension on the top right corner of your browser. Clicking in this will leads you to configuring your OneNote with this extension. After this, clicking on the extension will allow you to save as bookmark URL or the article or a region or even the full page. You are also provided with an option to change the directory to save. Once you select Clip, it is saved to your OneNote.
Note: For Microsoft Edge, there is no need to add an extension. It natively has the feature to make a web note. Press Make a Web note on the top right corner on the Edge browser and you’re good to go.

5. Apps with OneNote
There are a number of apps that works with OneNote to improve your productivity. Apps like Office Lens and Genius Scan helps you to scan documents and share it easily to OneNote. Also Powerbot for Gmail makes it easy to save important emails and conversations directly to OneNote.

Tags is a small feature that help you to manage your OneNote content easily. They are helpful to identify and deliver the details in a Note with ease. There are tags for content like phone numbers, addresses etc.
To access tags, Navigate to Paragraph Formatting >> Select Tags
7. Handwriting recognition
If you’re still into pen and paper for taking notes and also into OneNote, this might help you out. OneNote has the ability to convert hand written texts into digital notes. Just make notes on OneNote using a stylus and it automatically converts it into digital format. They can also identify shapes.
This can be done by writing on the Page using a stylus. Then click on Lasso Select >> Select the text to scan >> Select Ink to Text.
Now your writing will be converted to text using OCR recognition. This is applicable to shapes too.
So, if you’re rocking a Touch based device and a stylus, then this might change your way of taking notes.
