In this article we're gonna see in-depth review of the new Notification center and Action Center in Windows phone 8.1 OS Developer preview.
As expected from the previously heard rumors of the new notification center from " Windows phone Blue " project aka windows phone 8.1 (as of now) , it looks like an serious overhaul from the Redmond giant. Notification center is one of the most anticipated feature from the consumers (it's you!) since the release of Windows phone 7 OS.
Notification center :
Below is a screenshot of the new Notification center in Windows Phone 8.1 . Actually notification center performs quite good but not as par as the Notification system present in android and iOS.
The highlighting feature present in this is you can control the notifications of each and every app on your own. You can even control the banners (toast notifications) of every app whether they can show banners or not. And If you wish to clear the notifications, you can just slide the notification to the right or you can tap the clear all button to clear all notification at once.
Added to that , you can find the shortcut to settings menu when you drag the notification bar down. You can also find the battery percentage, date on the top of the screen.
Moving on to settings, we can find the list of apps that can show notifications. On clicking an application, we can find more controls which includes " SHOW IN ACTION CENTER " , " SHOW NOTIFICATION BANNERS " and the " CUSTOM NOTIFICATION ALERT " which was included in the previous GDR 3 update aka Lumia black for Nokia Lumia series of phones. And also you can find a check box indicating whether to include vibration when notification arrives.
There is also an option to show notification bar in lock screen also. But you can disable it if you consider privacy as your first option rather than comfort. I myself feel comfortable in using notification center under lock screen!
Action Center :
Action center is nothing but quick setting toggles which is present a long time ago in the android ecosystem. There are limitations in WP 8.1. You can just set any four action buttons only with the exception of Lumia 1520 which is due to the fact that it fancies a six inch full HD screen. Also there is no option for cellular data toggle (May expect from next GDR update) which is a huge setback for some set of people. Other than the above reasons, Action center is also an awesome feature in WP 8.1.
Pros and Cons :
